How often do you just chat with your agent, i.e. about things that have nothing to do with your business relationship?

On Twitter fairly often. On email sometimes, usually after we discuss business. We’ve also met in person once and didn’t discuss business at all then.

Virtually every day, because my agent and I are both internet addicts. We spam each other on Facebook. We tweet ridiculous shit. We send snarky e-mail chains back and forth. I’ve totally just outed my identity with this answer, haven’t I?

Each time we get on the phone we talk about whatever, but it’s mostly focused on writing. The agent I intern for, we chat long periods about whatever, sometimes writing, sometimes pizza. LOL

Not often. The first couple minutes of a phone call might be just chatting about life or the vacation one of us has just been on or whatever, but it’s not like we gossip like BFFs…

It’s a new relationship and I’d say my agent is pretty much about business overall. There are Twitter conversations, though, that are not about our contract agreement and our phone conversations are always easy and friendly. But for me, though a friend is great, I wanted someone very smart about the business and very professional. I didn’t need a BFF for an agent, though a friendly person is nice.

On the call, I did mention my next project b/c it was in a different area and I wanted to be sure she was okay with that. She’s always happy to discuss ideas during outlining/brainstorming stage and to read first chapters/first 50 pages, etc. As for full reads, I’ve waited until it’s gone through one round of CP reads/revision before sending. I don’t feel it’s fair of me to ask her to read revision after revision, especially recognizing I’m not her only client and if we all did that… If I had a specific question about the marketability of an idea, I would definitely go to her before beginning to write.

Oh, haha, we definitely do! Mostly about American Horror Story and other random things. I like the ability to talk with an agent outside of the publishing side of things.
