Q08: Dream Relationship

(This question is part of a larger subseries called Perpetual WIPs: Querying Writers. For the remaining questions, see here.)

How do you envision your dream agent-client relationship?

***

I’d love a relationship with open and frequent communications on both sides. I don’t want to have to nag my agent for an update, but I also don’t want him/her to feel like they have to hand hold me either. I’d love someone who was a true advocate, smart with the changing publishing world, and truly looking out for their client’s interests. I’d also like an editorial agent who will help make sure my MS is the best possible before submitting.

I want someone who is in love with my work and wants to help me grow as a writer. This means someone communicative who’s willing to share bad news and offer suggestions as well as championing my manuscript when she presents it to editors.

Open communication, honesty, and a reasonable amount of time in responding to problems, questions. The agent should want to sell your book as much as you!

Someone who loves my concept and writing enough to work with me on it and possibly even on my earlier manuscript that I still really love. I know that may not happen, but that would be the dream. I’d want someone who’s responsive and keeps me updated on the process, someone who loves my work and is my best advocate.

My dream agent would be tenacious and professional, keeping me in the loop so that I’m never left wondering what’s going on. Ideally, this would be a partnership for the duration of my career.

When my ms goes to auction with three of the big six, she skypes me in so I can watch her talk on the phone. We tweet, e-mail, and are probably facebook friends. I can get in touch with her whenever I need too, and vice versa. She doesn’t make me feel silly for asking stupid questions.

I just want an enthusiastic agent that believes in me, encourages me, shows interest in my work, and gets me as a writer.
